Early summer, Year 756 of the New Age. Silverthorne, Silver Vale
Zeus breathed hard as he crashed through the trees and entered the area known as Silver Vale. He still felt the fear in his heart after his encounter with the crazed wolf. Only barely had he escaped.
Happy to see more familiar grounds, he paused and rested his tired body against a tree, when a dark male voice spoke to him: “Let me guess, you’ve been playing chase with the wolves, aye?”
Zeus looked up, surprised to find the large stag, Zeke, watching him with a humorous light in his eyes.
“There weren’t supposed to be wolves out there,” Zeus said without thinking further about the joke itself. He was still too scared. “I went to the Ash plains. And a wolf attacked me!”
Zeke stood thinking for a while, a serious arch on his forehead. “We had better get moving... they’re likely to be still searching for you. Wolves aren’t taken to losing prey.”
“But!” Zeus jumped after the other stag on tired legs. “There was only one, and I’m sure it was alone. It was crazed, I swear! I think it must have followed me from the woods.”
Zeke stopped to take in the words. “What do you propose we do then? We can’t let it wander, the day is growing to it’s prime, it’s getting warmer, and the does will be taking the fawns out of the camp to play soon. Fawn’s are too precious a commodity to lose at this point to be reckless with a hungry canine about.”
Zeus sighed, feeling even more tired … and small. “Well, I guess … we could tell the generals to be on a lookout. But to be honest I’d much prefer my father not hearing about it. So …” The fawnling looked up, fear reaching his eyes once again of the bare thought. “I guess we should kill it. Now.”
Zeke shuttered, looking rather excited. Zeus would never understand the other stag’s lust for a good chase or a kill.
“Or at the very least chase it back to the plains!”, Zeke said, already scouting for the crazed wolf.
“I think I left it a little while back,” Zeus explained. “I knocked it over with my horns out on the plains, that is how I managed to escape. It lay still a while, but then followed me. But it moves slow now, so it won’t be too near yet. But … if we just chase it off, I guess the generals would still need to know?”
“We’ll chase it away from the herdlands before we kill it, if the Generals find the body we’ll be in hot water.” Zeke replied, then starting towards the Ash Plains in a easy canter. Zeus sighed. Then followed on tired legs.
